After major successes in the late eighties, followed up by ten years of silence, Domain got back together in 2001 to release their comeback album One Million Lightyears From Home. Within a short period of time the band released four albums on the Point Music label. Last Days Of Utopia - a concept album based on a story written by vocalist Schulz - is the first album released by Limb Music.
I had some doubts after the first seconds of Last Days Of Utopia. The band kicks in at maximum speed and actually made me fear for the worst: if the band keeps up this tempo there is little for me to enjoy. Luckily after the 70 second opening track “Harbour Of Hope”, Domain proves to be able to alternate powerful orchestral metal with intense melodic rock; precisely the way I like it.
It’s not hard to hear that Domain is a mature metal band. The songs are well structured and the album is well balanced. | |
One of the things I like most is the fact that the guitars sound modest in the mix. There are a lot of symphonic melodic metal releases that are spoiled by the dominance of excessive guitars, but here the guitars serve the whole. The production of the album is much better than the production of their previous album The Sixth Dimension.
The album features eleven songs including the short opener and two one minute instrumental intersections. I won’t bother you with the concept, but do not expect too much of it. The usual discovery of the “Beauty Of Love” (one of the better ballads I’ve heard in a long time) resulting in a situation where the main character is being “Left Alone”, the title of the final track and a proper climax of the album. I hardly ever experience the lyrics while listening to music anyway, so this doesn’t bother me much, especially because the music is quite good. (Geert) |
