Before I started to write my review of this re-release of Time Machine’s Evil I took a few minutes to find out what had been written about the album when it initially was released in 2002. The fact that Time Machine belongs to the top progressive metal bands in Italy didn’t seem to impress the reviewers that much. You often read that without pinpointing the problem, most of the writers find that despite the potential, there is something missing. In my opinion Time Machine is not sophisticated enough. The songs are too plain, too basic to leave a deep impression. After listening to the album a couple of times, you simply get bored. Not a good thing for a progressive metal release. There are of course some above average songs on Evil, “Evil Lies” and “Angel Of Death” for example, but all in all there are not enough minutes of solid progressive metal to make this album worth buying.

Another complaint I ran into is the limited quality of the vocals, almost inherent to the Italian origin of the band. You don’t get bothered by any accents, but the vocals are somewhat hollow and flat.
In reaction to the reviewers most of the classic melodic prog metal fans really dig this album, rating it one or two points higher. They are proclaiming to enjoy the ‘excellent musicians’, the ‘incredible vocals’ and proclaiming this one to be Time Machine’s best so far. I must admit that my personal opinion lies closer to the reviewers. To me this is just another average album which I have no doubt a lot of people will like. I wouldn’t recommend it to my friends; there are simply too many albums of higher quality available.
