Of all the Limb music re-releases of the past couple of months Khali’s self titled debut album from 2000 made the most impression on me, mainly because the music of this Italian band lies closest to my personal likings. The reason for the re-release is the lack of proper promotion and distribution in the year 2K. A solid reason because this band proves to be worth it.
The musical mastermind of Khali is Lorenzo Dehò, professional bass player. This is a huge plus because the bass lines are prominent in the mix and prove to be the solid basis of the compositions, too bad that the drums occasionally sound a little bit too flat. I generally like albums written by bass players. The sound of the album is superb. Heavy and powerful but with a rock edge.
The music of Khali is generally described as an accessible version of Queensryche’s Empire, a solid comparison. | |
The band combines melodic metal with some progressive sections. The craftsmanship stands beyond doubt. Each member has left its marks on the Italian metal or prog scene and again they prove to be able to come up with exciting compositions and interesting story tales. If I had to mention one small point of criticism - and again it concerns a personal preference - I would have liked to hear some more guitar solos because the ones on the album are killer. There’s slightly too much rhythm guitar on this debut.
This re-release features one bonus track called “Will You Remember Me”. Despite the fact that this track is of Khali quality I wonder whether it’s worth buying the re-release if you already have the original version. Khali is interesting for people in search of accessible melodic and slightly progressive metal. (Geert) |
