After listening to The Empire’s Slave I was left with one question. Why the hell was decided on releasing seventy minutes of music when only about thirty minutes are worth listening to? A big problem is the fact that these thirty minutes of nice music are dispersed over the thirteen songs. In general most of the songs are too long and because every song only has one or two interesting sections, the result is a rather boring album.
Demolution started out as a Nirvana cover band, something that isn’t easy to hide. The first couple of songs the vocals - a rare combination of Barry Hay meets Kobain - sound quite pleasant. Too band that every song features the same kind of vocals. The lack of variation in music as well as vocals is the biggest short coming of this young band.
One thing that doesn’t help this band is the grungy production of the album. | |
I know that it isn’t easy for a young band to finance a recording, but this production crushes the music even more. On the positive side there definitely are some parts on the album where Demolution sounds promising. “Reach Down”, one of the better songs, features catchy melodies and powerful guitars. The acoustic orientated “Now I Know By Now” is an experiment that worked out nice - the vocals suit this slightly psychedelic atmosphere better than the rock metal songs. With some polishing and some small adjustments this might be the direction in which this band has to evolve.
If the band had just put the best of the music they had on a forty minute disc, my rating would have easily been 1.5 to 2 points higher. (Geert) |
