‘Decipher’ is the second release of the Dutch band After Forever. They consist of a female singer, with the two guitarists in the band using grunt vocals and even some ‘screams’. The opera-like vocals from Floor Jansen seem to fit in well with those from the guitarists. Another good element of this usually fast paced music, is the use of violins and other instruments. Together with a small choir, there are some resemblences with Therion.
This can be heard right away during the opening track ‘Ex Cathedra’. After Forever doesn’t go too far with this and the second song ‘Monolith of Doubt’ illustrates that. With the use of keyboard and the fast drum/guitar work, Nightwish comes to mind. You can already hear the different vocals in this song and so the first two songs give a good impression of what is to come. | |
‘Imperfect Tenses’ is a surpringly nice ballad; a duet with Floor Jansen and a guest musician. It’s refreshing to hear some clean male vocals after the heavier grunt parts. One of my favorite tracks is the last one, called ‘Forlorn Hope’. The melodic and upbeat tempo’s are mixed with slower and darker parts, combined with nice violins. The last minute of this song and thus cd is just killer and it leaves a very good impression of what you’ve been hearing for the last hour.
If you’re interested in bands such as Therion and Nightwish, this is a must have to check out!
