Reading the pretentious bio of Sunset Vertigo, a young band from Utrecht, The Netherlands, I was already looking forward to bashing these eighteen and nineteen year olds. I mean, a statement like “Other bands need at least three to four years to make the same progression Sunset Vertigo went through in only three months”, brings out the worst in me. I will decide whether these boys are any good! From the first to the final second of this twelve minute EP, I was blown off my feet. The disc sounded excellent, even during the first spin in my PC with really crappy speakers. As a matter of fact I checked whether I had put the right disc into the cd-player. The melodic alternative rock, in the vain of modern day top 40 rock, had a certain adventurous edge separating Sunset Vertigo from the commercial stuff you are used to hearing on the popular radio stations.

The power on the album is pure and very direct. If I hadn’t read the bio I’d be convinced that I was listening to a professional band with years and years of experience, resulting in their best effort so far. The only bad thing I could think of, is the fact that there is no way that Sunset Vertigo are going to beat this release later on in their career. I am quite certain that commerce will take the best of this band, destroying the edgy feeling with overproduction and generalizing the sound. Sunset Vertigo beware!!!
