It’s been almost six years since the latest release of Varathron, one of the oldest brutal bands in Greece. But they’ve got a new album called Crowsreign. According to the promotional flyer the brainchild of vocalist Stephan Necroabyssious has a complete new line-up.

The music should be placed in the blackened death metal corner, because it holds elements of both genres. What I like about this album is that the brutal parts (there a lot of them) are combined with acoustic guitars and piano tunes. If Varathron chose not to do so, this album would be pretty boring.

Something I don’t really like about Crowsreign are the vocals of the Stephan Necroabyssious; they are brutal all the time. Sure, nothing wrong with that. But sometimes I have the idea that his grunts don’t fit the music. Sometimes you expect some clean vocals or some high pitched screams, which would have been better.

The production of this album is great. Crownsreign gives me the same feeling as ‘Lyssa…’ of Nightfall did. It’s a flawless production so to speak. All we have to do now is wait and see what the future holds for these Greek guys.
