The melodic progressive metal band Shaaman (previously known as Shaman) was founded by three members of the very successful Angra. It only took one album to regain the fame the members had in their early days. The debut Ritual was very well received in South America resulting in extensive touring. Now their second album, by the name of Reason, sees the light of day. Again Shaaman filled the album with innovative yet appealing melodies, atmospheric feelings and powerful vocals. This is why the band reminds me more of Dream Theater than all the Dream Theater clones that overflow the market these days.

The band describes their latest effort as: “not simply metal, but a journey on every feeling one can express with music. A journey through the ranges of emotions.” There’s no way that I can write anything that comes closer to the truth, so I’ll leave it at that. Despite a minor dip half way the album, I can’t think of any criticism whatsoever. Great sounds, great production (Sascha Paeth) and excellent music. Even the obliged ballad has been turned into a masterpiece!
