As Holland is still rich of bands who want to play for fun it is nice to see when these bands finally make a CD. Septuagint is a band that has been around for years and years and apart from demo’s they never released a proper CD. Untill now. With really amazing artwork the album ‘When Good & Evil Fall In Love’ hits the streets. After a nice and spooky intro, with a direct reference to King Diamond’s ‘Them’, the album heavily opens with ‘The Innocent Abandoned’. A heavy sound but at the same time thin guitar sound sets my enthusiasm a bit back but since it sounds homogenic to the rest it is a matter of time to get used to.
The music lies in the traditional Power/Heavy Metal, Omen meets Annihilator meets King Diamond? Omen because of the sound of the band and singer Kees’s voice which reminds me of the first Omen singer JD Kimball. ‘When Good & Evil Fall In Love’ is a concept album that seems to be fitting perfectly to the Fantasy genre that is boosted by movies like Harry Potter and The Lord Of The Rings. Maybe that’s a new branch in music; Harry Potter Metal?
All joking aside, this album is a nice piece of work but in all honesty it must be said that the song arrangements are bit old fashioned long, stylewise they are close to each other and a concept album in my opinion must feature a story, not only lyrically but also in music and that’s where Septuagint kinda slips. | |
Plus when you decide to use a narrator make sure that he can be easily heard without the use of the lyric sheet. The story is nice, a classic love story with a few hints to mother Earth. Some flaws here too, how can a butterfly fly to someone who has cold snow on her feet? I am ‘antfucking’ now but sometimes these things come up, hey, I can’t help it.
Best songs are ‘Ballad Of Agression’, Íntermezzo; Choices At The Bridge’ and ‘Promised Land’, these represent Septuagint at their best; powerful with feeling.
I can’t help wondering how this album would have turned out when the recordings and production were done at a bigger and more equipped studio, I think I would rate it higher than I do now, the music is OK.
