This is funny! Kataplexia is a brutal death metal band from Finland, but none of its members are Finnish. Founder, drummer and singer Rodrigo Artiga is originally from El Salvador while guitarist Davi Moreira and bassist Mikael Da Costa are from Brazil. It’s kind of funny that they meet up in Finland of all places.

So after founding the band in 2003 things got started for Artiga. He recorded the band’s debut, Morgue’s Reality on his own. But when it came to playing on stage, he realized he needed a ‘real’ band. So he recruited Moreira and Da Costa and Kataplexia was complete.

After a year of playing some gigs and intensive song writing, the band entered the studio to record Catastrophic Scenes.

The result is smashing. This album bursts with old school death metal in the vein of Suffocation, Dying Fetus and Cannibal Corpse, but it’s not a direct copy of those bands.

The production is exactly how I like a death metal album to be, it’s dirty in a positive way. A nice little extra is given on the album by the way; a video track of “Brutal Addiction”. The video reminds me somewhat of the “Devoured By Vermin” video of Cannibal Corpse; chaotic filming and a lot of blood. It’s nice to see Artiga playing the drums and growling in the mic at the same time. Keep an eye out for these guys!
