Usually I’m not very fond of tribute albums. I always think: “Why listen to an album full of covers, when you might as well listen to the original tracks?” This time though, it is different. First of all because Saxon are one of my favorite bands and I wondered how other bands would cover their songs. Secondly, this is a very diverse compilation. Apart from classic heavy metal bands like Twisted Tower Dire, Paragon or Goddess Of Desire, there are also bands like Dark Age, Necronomicon or Solitude who have their part on this album. Now I wondered, what would Dark Age sound like covering Saxon?
The variety makes an interesting whole. Not only because there are some excellent covers on this piece, but also because there are truly horrific covers as well. In fact, Solitude’s cover of “Rainbow Theme – Frozen Rainbow” from the first Saxon album is the worst cover I’ve ever heard. On the other hand, Twisted Tower Dire’s cover of “Warrior” blew me away – it’s almost as good as the original version!
There’s another interesting aspect on Eagleution: the covers are chosen from a wide range of Saxon albums. | |
The songs are taken from the first album Saxon to the second last album Killing Ground. I have to say it’s a shame Remedy didn’t send the complete version of Eagleution. The second CD which seems to include some interesting tracks wasn’t enclosed in the promo. I would’ve loved to hear the Heavy Metal Maniacs covering Saxon.
Taking everything into consideration, this is a passable compilation mainly because of its variety. There are some bands here of which I never thought they’d cover Saxon. Although some of those covers are awful, they’re still fun to listen to. And of course there are some tracks which I named before that are just very good. And that’s what makes a tribute interesting.
