A familiar name in the east of this country is Destination Zero, who have already established a reputation and fanbase through their gigs. Operating On All Frequencies is their debut demo/album, consisting of six songs and bonus video material. Founded in July 2000, their goal was to create a hybrid form of metal, alternative music and drum `n` bass they call eclectic; with this album they`ve done pretty well in succeeding that goal.
In the six songs showcased on this album a wide variety of parallels can be heard, the most obvious one being the Beastie Boys (vocals), but also Cubanate (blending metal with electronics) and Nine Inch Nails (song structures). While the songwriting is good and the musician skills are sufficient, Operating On All Frequencies stumbles over the production which is definitely _not_ sufficient for an album like this. | |
The rock-sound is too dense and fuzzy for the instruments to come clearly out of the mix, creating a very dull sound for the beats and an even worse, pale sound for the djembes. A clearer, more industrial-like production would have been more fitting for the music.
Aside from that, Destination Zero has done a great job in showing the potential of such a musical hybrid, and hopefully they will come up with new material and better production soon. In the meantime, you can order Operating On All Frequencies by contacting destinationzero@gmx.net
