“When the Full moon rises, a Wretched Creature is called from the Black Abyss by an Ancient Cult. The creature will Murder, and this Mayhem will be the End of Mankind. In the Cold Grip of Darkness the World will (finally) Sleep…” This could be a lyric taken from Kathaarian’s “Cryptic Temples Of The Ancient Cult” though I really don’t know, since the lyrics aren’t included in the very minimal two-page black-and-white CD booklet.
In dark medieval times, the Katharians were a religious cult that refused to acknowledge the authority of the Catholic Church. The word Katharian is related to Katharsis which means ‘pure’. They believed in both a good and an evil god, respectively Jesus and Jahweh (God). These gods were equals, in contradiction to the Catholic God and Devil, where God overpowers the Devil.

The CD title seems to refer to this history.
Kathaarian is a German black metal band and is not to be confused with the Turkish band Kathaarian. “Cryptic Temples Of The Ancient Cult” is their first album released on CD and vinyl (limited to 300 copies). The band consists of three members: Vetle (vocals), Nysrogh (strings) and Propagan (drums). Kathaarian plays fast black metal of the rawer type. The music is easily comparable to Darkthrone, though is a lot more boring. The eight tracks sound a bit alike, both musically and lyrically. The music is quite well played and quite well produced though. There isn’t much more to be said. One last advice: listen to “Kathaarian Life Code” from Darkthrone instead!
