The history of the Canadian Ivory Knight is rather strange because even though the band was already formed back in the late 1980s they’ve only released one full length up until now. The band, formed by singer John Devadasan Perinbam and drummer Paul Malek, who played drums on the legendary Annihilator demos, split due to musical differences soon afterwards only to be reformed again back in 1999. A first full length “Up From The Ashes” (a rather fitting title) was soon after recorded.

Ivory Knight’s melodic power metal stands out from the crowds. The rather weird vocals of Perinbam combined with powerful melodies, great harmonies, and excellent guitar work has definitely led to an interesting sound. Personally, I am not a big fan of the vocals but I must admit that they have a very distinct sound; something many singers in the current power metal scene are lacking.

The strongest part of Ivory Knight is definitely the vast amount of variety they offer. “Unsconscience” features powerful (at times bordering on thrash) riffing but also excellent guitar harmonies and melodies. It’s catchy at times, but also powerful and first and foremost Ivory Knight have managed to stay away from overdone and corny ballads.

As a sale’s point Jeff Waters is mentioned as the producer of this disc. Unfortunately, I think the sound is rather lacking; especially the drums sound rather horrid and muffled and Ivory Knight would have benefited much more from a clearer and heavier production. Nevertheless, “Unconscience” is a very nice addition to the collection of any power metal fan. I’m looking forward to the next release of these old school and sincere Canadians.
