After a 4 year absence Swedish Mörk Gryning break the silence again with their 3 release Maelstrom Chaos. The most interesting question is of course whether it has been worth the wait; is it indeed one of the most powerful releases ever as daringly stated in the bio? Founders Goth Gorgon and Draakh Kimera do possess the skills required to create a diverse and catchy blackmetal album. Their abilities are best reflected in ‘The Darkness Within’, a melodic mid-tempo song, in which the tension is nicely built up.

As a whole Maelstrom Chaos provides that what you expect of a blackmetal album, the piercing riffs, the aggressiveness, the sinister atmosphere. However it fails to surprise or grab the listener by the throat. The album therefore doesn’t really live up to it’s promise and doesn’t provide the fresh blood the blackmetal genre is craving for. However Mörk Gryning fans and all those that do not give a f#*k about the above can safely check out this honest and solid blackmetal album.
