In my opinion there’s no better way to make atmospheric albums than if you’re a bass player. Dug Pinnick is a bass player, a bass player who gained world wide fame for his contributions to King’s X. Take for example the incredible “Noon”, a low tempo emotional song with very deep down tuned bass play and delightful vocals. It’s too bad that not all vocals on this album are of equal quality. Some of the more noisy songs, where the vocals tend to be rougher, the vocal quality doesn’t stand out. Pinnick also put some experimental compositions on ‘Emotional Animal’. “Equal Rights” is such a composition. The track is inspired by country & western and blues music and is basically a very simple song but the power of the bass gives the songs emotional charge turning it into one of the best songs on the album. | |
Not all experiments are of equal success. The freaky “Freak The Funk Out” proves to be overdone with its computer beats and crazy sounds, making you wonder whether Pinnicks six year old boy next door had something to do with it. It’s not that it’s a bad song, but it would have been better to make it some sort of a bonus track.
So, in conclusion this is a pretty original and very diverse album with a very strong rhythm section. Recommended to people in search of something else. (Geert) |
