Obituary are back and at the same time have never been away. After the release of “ Back From The Dead” the members decided to put Obituary on ice for a couple of months. However, as we all know months turned into a year and then into several years as each member followed other goals in life (singer John Tardy became a computer technician and drummer Donald Tardy played drums for party rocker Andrew WK, for instance).

It was this Andrew WK who, in a sense, brought the band back together; as he kept on insisting that John joined him on stage. So a rehearsal room was set up again, Obituary began playing together and decided they still had a good time which each other; thus Obituary rose from the grave.

The album title “Frozen In Time” could very well be a statement to the public that Obituary has always sounded and always will sound as one band only: Obituary!
While the instrumental opener could have been on any other old school death metal album, it is the second track “On The Floor” that makes clear that nothing has changed.

Where John Tardy opens his mouth and once again lets us hear his renowned grunt, we all know that although they are a few years older they still mean business.

The sound is massive and crystal clear, especially the drums sound thunderous and the tracks were well rehearsed before being recorded so tightness is not an issue (if it ever was anyway). The groove that is so important for old school death metal is very present resulting is sore neck muscles after a few listening session which is the most important sign that this album kills.

Even for me, who is too young to actively have experienced the release of “Slowly We Rot” and “Cause Of Death” this album holds no surprises. Obituary cannot be accused of innovative and groundbreaking songwriting, but when they release such a strong album they don’t have to.
