This is already the fourth full-length album of Månegarm, they are still on the label they signed to eight years ago and Kris Verwimp did the cover painting, as always. You could say that these Swedes are somewhat conservative and considering the fact that they play Viking Metal this isn’t something unexpected.
For those who don’t know: Viking Metal is a style of music overlapping several genres (power metal, death metal and black metal) but with one common characteristic and that is their focus on old Scandinavian myths and legends.
Besides obviously this album I only know their 2000 release “Havets Vargar” and when I compare the two of them I must say that although the pace went down the quality of the compositions and the production went up.
”Vredens Tid” was recorded in the Underground Studios and sounds, as I said, very good. | |
I especially like the way the guitars sound: melodic but still with a lot of power.
The album itself is pretty versatile; ranging from up-tempo metal tracks like “Dodens Strand” and “Frekastein” via mid paced “doomy” tracks such as “Kologa Trolltand” to folky songs as “Segervisa”. The frequent use of violins and a female singer maintains the melodic touch throughout the album, making this a rich, multifaceted album which I can listen to again and again. The Swedish language, in which all the lyrics are, is very suitable of course for this kind of music but all lyrics are translated in English and printed in the booklet besides the original version so non-Swedes can read what the story is about. “Vredens Tid” is a great album from these Viking metal veterans.
