With their third album "Quarante Jours Sur Le Sinaï" the French progressive rock band Nil got international visibility, resulting in a contract with Canadian Unicorn Digital. “Nil Novo Sub Solo” is the bands fourth release and the first one on for that mentioned label. The album features six songs, differing in length and in feel. Opener is the twenty minute epic “Le Gardien” which is characterized by relatively slow and atmospheric rhythms combined with female vocals and ending in an instrumental mayhem. The vocal parts on the album are reduced to four of the six tracks but I can assure you that the vocal capacities of Roselyne Berthet had nothing to do with that!

The vocals (in French) sound fine and definitely suit the music, creating nice melodies in the at some times slightly long-winded compositions.

The instrumental tracks are darker, more mystic than the others and feature some of the best compositions on the album. Catchy rhythms and poppy melodies are hard to find on “Nil Novo Sub Solo” and the moog is one of the most prominent instruments. Therefore this one might do better among the older progressive rock fans.
