Withered is one of the newer bands in the death metal genre. After a demo in 2004 the band released this debut album, also containing the three tracks from their demo. Withered is from Atlanta (USA) and its members are Chris Freeman (guitars and vocals), Greg Hess (bass guitar), Mike Thompson (guitars and vocals) and Wes Kever (drums).

The Memento Mori album is fast, technical death metal in the vein of Dismember, At the Gates and Entombed, varied by some slower and dramatic parts. Because of the slower parts, the contradiction makes the faster parts sound extra brutal and aggressive.

This makes the album interesting and keeps your attention, even after listening to it several times. The somewhat short album comes slowly to a halt with its finale, called ‘Among Sorrow’. This seventh song differs somewhat from the rest of the album because of the lack of speed and variation. In short an interesting debut album, I’m looking forth to their next album to see if there is any progress.
