Grenouer is a techno-death metal band from Russia. At least, that’s the way they describe themselves in their biography. Now, please don’t think that the term techno means that we have some house version of metal or something. In the case of Grenouer this means that the drums sound like beats and the guitars are heavily down-tuned, kinda like in the vein of, ofcourse, Fear Factory.
The term death metal is somewhat strange because only the rasping death grunt of vocalist Ind reminds of that particular genre. The full length from 2003 “Presence With War” which was also included in the press package shows where the roots of Grenouer lie. That one is filled with straightforward industrial death metal and “Try” is at least a lot more original. | |
The chunky riffs combined with harsh groovy rhythms and aforementioned grunt makes it a bit hard to pinpoint a genre that Grenouer would fit in. I think that fans of Fear Factory and maybe Meshuggah and Gojira should take a listen to this because it has the same feel to it. The songs are complex and show that Grenouer, which was formed in 1992, has a lot of experience and they know how to write a song. With this release, they aim at spreading their name outside the Russian borders and judging this review that goal has been achieved. “Try” has quality enough to secure a record deal in the Western World.
