5M3 was once known under the lesser friendly name Gutfuck. Under this moniker they released two demo’s, one in 2001 and the other, nameless one, in 2004. (Review can be found here).
When the direction of the music changed they decided that the name Gutfuck didn’t fully convey their new style and changed it to 5M3, which has two meanings: five cubic meters and Five Modern Manly Men.
In comparison to the previous life the biggest change is that they let go of the grind influence in the sound but instead tried to create a more heavy combination of metalcore and death metal. The result is groovier, a tad less fast but overall more convincing. Nothing groundbreaking original or genre defining but it certainly is solid and I just like the overall feel of the music. | |
The sound also has increased a lot; it still is far from professional but it is not bad at all, making this a successful predecessor to their previous releases. Once again, the packaging is out of the ordinary; the promo is pressed on a 3” cd, making sure that it stands out from the rest of the releases.
The target for this release it to obtain as much gigs as possible so “Promo 2005”can be seen as mainly a teaser for venues and reviewers. This also explains the short running time, if you want to hear more 5M3 you just have to book them.
Oh yeah, if you want to check out 5M3 for yourself without spending any money, you can download “Promo 2005” in its entirety from the band’s homepage: www.5m3.nl).
