WOW! That was the only word I could utter after finishing ‘Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone’; the new Akercocke album. I wasn’t particularly familiar with Akercocke, but I knew a couple of songs from their previous album, ‘Choronzon’, and I really liked their musicianship and their originality.

The path they have chosen on ‘Choronzon’ is continued on ‘Words That Go Unspoken…’, which means more diversity in the music. Since the release of their previous album, there has been a small line-up change; guitarist Paul Scanlan is replaced by Matthew Wilcock (ex-The Berzerker). Both Matt Wilcock and vocalist/guitarist Jason Mendonca create a dark and gloomy atmosphere on ‘Words That Go Unspoken…’.

The tracks on this album are multi-layered and by that I mean the diversity in the songs. There’s, as always, a sort of death metal basis which is combined with black metal, prog metal (with some serious Rush influences!) and even some music from the Middle East or the Orient. Add to that some really brutal drumming and dude, WOW! Just WOW!
I thought Opeth’s latest album was killer, but ‘Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone’ is some serious competition for that one!
