This debut album has all the characteristics of a best off compilation. With every song you get the feeling that it comes from a different album by the same band aging over about ten years. The lack of consistency between songs makes this debut rather odd. The instrumental opener suggests that Dragonfly is all about orchestral arrangements.
The next song is plain crap wannabe heavy metal, with hardly any tempo in the song and a harsh and pretty flat metallic sound. All the different instruments seem to have been recorded individually, not intended to end up in a song. Next up, the listener is baffled by a more than acceptable gothic song with quite good vocals and clever melody changes. Out of the blue the band truly shows potential here. Too bad just few of the songs come close to this ‘highlight’. Overall the sound is too weak; the tempo is too low and most important there’s not a single part of my body actually reacting to the music. | |
“Awake To Revive”, the fifth track has some good breaks, but the overall sound quality is too poor to judge the rhythm section properly. I bet that this one really stands out on stage (where the sound is probably better than on the silver disc).
All in all there are more than two or three things I regret on this debut. The poor sound (and therefore the lack of power) and the fact that the compositions aren’t very consistent. The musicians stand out in mediocrity. Not a single instrument stands out (partly due to the weak mix) and the vocals of the female vocalist aren’t sufficient to really capture the attention of the listener. On the positive side, Dragonfly have came a long way and prove to have some potential with “Falling Down”. I however doubt whether this band will be able to take their music to the next level and break the borders of their region.
