Looking at the album cover and band logo the style of music played by Headless Cross isn’t very hard to guess. Headless Cross plays speed metal or, to be more specific, retro-speed metal. Musically I haven’t got anything to complain; nice and sharp speed riffs, lots of great hooks. The Metallica influences (‘Kill ‘Em all’ period) are really huge but that doesn’t really bother me. What’s bothering me are the vocals from lead singer Dave Silver, this man absolutely can’t sing. | |
With a decent lead singer ‘Burning Sanctuary’ would have been a very strong speed metal EP.
All is not lost yet. If the band will manage to shake of the big Metallica shadow and, more important, if they can find a better vocalist, Headless Cross will absolutely be one of the better speed metal bands in the near future. The potential is absolutely there, it only needs to be worked out.
