Comparing yourself to legandary bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Kyuss and Monster Magnet is something you should be careful with I think. The Quill do it anyway. And damn it, they get away with it most of the time. Voodoo Caravan is their third album and it is pretty good. Good old fashioned hardrock with a nice stoner feel to it. Singer Magnus Ekvall has a great bluesy voice that fits with the seventies rock riffs. The slide guitar in Until Earth Is Bitter Gone adds up to the Led Zeppelin feel. Mellotrons, acoustic guitars and percussion ensure variation during the album. Too bad there are some weaker songs as well. | |
Shapes Of Afterlife for instance is a bit artificialy stoner. In Save Me singer Ekvall`s howls are over the top. I mean, just because you can doesn`t mean you have to! The Quill are at their best when they mix Led Zeppelin with Monster Magnet and most of the album that`s just what they do. The Quill consists of good and experienced musicians. Bass player Roger Nilsson is parttime member of Spiritual Beggars and toured with Arch Enemy. Drummer Jolle Atlegic helped out Bill Steer`s Firebird during their last tour. It`s clear they master their instruments very well and they don`t have to show off to prove it.
