Theater of Tragedy is Norway’s biggest Gothic metal band. In 2003 female singer Liv Kristine parted ways with the band. In 2006 the band releases its 6th album “Storm” with the new female singer Nell, although she has been more than 2 years with Theatre of Tragedy. Nell has a very bright voice witch is quite contrasting with the heavy riffs and therefore I like it. In comparison with the album “Assembly” (2002) the songs on “Storm” are more heavy and symphonic. I personally like “Storm” better.
The sound of “Storm” is bright and fits very well to the voice of Nell. Responsible for this sound is Greg Reely (e.g. Paradise Lost and Fear Factory). Unfortunately there are 2 little minus points, the piano playing is often too much on the front and then drowns out the heavy guitarsound. Second minus point is the voice of Raymond I. Rohonyi, it’s really very monotonous, it sounds almost like a computer voice. Fortunately there is enough left to enjoy. | |
“Can you see the storm getting closer now” are the first words of the first song (title song) of the album Nell sings with bright voice, soon followed by heavy riffs. “Storm” is a heavy start of a strong album followed by “Silence”, these songs have quit some similarities. “Ashes & Dreams” is a song with a lot of symphonic influences and even a little guitarsolo. “Voices” and “Exile” are very accessible and radio-minded, these songs could be hit singles.
“Fade” is a great ballad, “Senseless” is a steady song and has some influences of The Gathering (dreaming-metal). Heavy gothic tracks are “Begin & End”, “Disintegration” and “Debris”. I like these songs, they have a strong, dark melodies, powerful arrangements and calm moments. I have used my repeat button often!
With “Storm” Theater of Tragedy has made a strong comeback after the departure of Liv Kristine.
