Spaceship Landing is known to be one of the most promising German stoner rock bands at the moment. Listening to the self titled debut I cannot conclude otherwise than that the band absolutely deserves this label.
The band couldn’t have started off with a better track than “8Tel Ride”. I totally dig the way the music keeps building up and the clear metal influences – great riffs and some excellent late Anathema soundscapes.
The track ‘No Punk’ stands in huge contrast to the first because of the psychedelic approach. Therefore this one seems less tight, but due the great guitar solos and the excellent keyboards one might easily consider this one to be another small masterpiece. | |
It’s also good to hear that this band has got the quality to produce great music, not only at maximum power, but also when they shift back a gear or two.
There are a few disappointments on the album, mainly consisting of copied melodies, the use of saxophone (an instrument I can appreciate at times) and the dusty sound. I don’t expect stoner rock albums to be crisp, but this one could have been slightly clearer. A major plus is the general lack of vocals. Not a big surprise because the music is as solid as a rock.
