I have no doubt that the electro gothic fans among our readers will be pleased with the new Das Ich album. Fans won’t be disappointed. On a critical view I must admit that I have some mixed feelings about ‘Cabaret’.

All songs are pure electronic (no guitars here) with German vocals. This works very, very well in combination with the historic sounds of early twentiest century theatre. Opener ‘Moritat’ is in one word impressive as is ‘Macht’. The dark, powerful vocals of the opener remind me of a certain dictator I won’t name. ‘Macht’ is about control over puppets in a puppet theatre, a clever reference. The vocals remind me a bit of the War documentaries on Discovery, I believe Das Ich refer to their own music as ‘Toteskunst’(Death art).

The more popular compositions like ‘Atemlos’ and ‘Opferzeit’ are rather weak, as is the variety between cold and bombastic songs. I know that this is one of the main charateristics of Das Ich, I just don’t like it very much.

Despite the fact that the music on ‘Cabaret’ is getting slightly predictable in the end (sadly the concept of the theater seems to end halfway the album bringing down the rating), the album is probably one of the better by the band.

Oh, one last thing: the female vocals on ‘Nahe’ make no sense at all.
