Well, if you’ve read my Arena ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ review, you won’t be surprised to read that I’m excited about this Quidam live DVD as well. Both DVD’s were filmed by the same crew, in the same venue, the Theatr Śląski in Katowice. What made this DVD slightly difficult for me to review is that I’m not very familiar with these Polish proggers.
What I do know is that Quidam was one of Poland best prog products in the nineties and that the vocal capacities of female singer Ea. Smarzyńska had a lot to do with that. Years have past; Ea. left the band, as did other members. It was only after a twelve month break that the remaining members decided to carry on with the band.
The band recorded a new album in 2005 and you won’t be surprised that over half of the tracks on the DVD are from this album. | |
I know that a DVD review should be primary about the pictures and the sound, but there’s not much to tell you other than that these are top notch. As with the Arena DVD this one crystal clear and full of bright contrasts. The only reason why I haven’t rated this one as high as the Arena DVD is because of the rather poor vocals of the new front man Bartek Kossowicz, and I’m not even biassed!
At moments he takes away some of the pleasure watching and listening to this release. The musicians however make up for most of this with their solid musicianship. The DVD also features some bonus material that might be interesting for the fans, most of all reports from 2005 tour. So in conclusion: another excellent DVD release by Metal Mind Productions.
