Another live DVD produced by the Polish boys and girls of Metal Mind Productions. And this time it’s a live DVD (the first ever!) from the Brazilian deathmetal hurricane Krisiun. The packaging looks quite fiery, so I fed the disc to my DVD-player, installed myself in the couch and turned up the volume of my TV, ready to experience some nice and cosy family value all-round high-speed (almost) live blasphemous deathmetal.
The main screen of this DVD looks nice and well designed. With just the options ´Concert´, ´Extras´ and ´Settings´ it’s rather difficult to get lost in the menu, so that shouldn’t pose much of a problem. For the settings, one can choose from 2.0 stereo and 5.1 surround. There are also a lot of extra’s to be found on this DVD, but more on that later.
After I’d set the sound, I opted for the main concert. It features Krisiun filmed at the Metal mania festival 2004, held at the Spodek venue in Katowice, Poland. This concert features 9 tracks that last about 39 minutes in total. These 9 tracks are an anthology from the Apocalyptic Revelation album to the Works Of Carnage album.
The concert itself is filmed nicely with, I think, about three or four cameras. These move steady and surely and the changing in between them goes nice and not to shackey. The quality of the imagery is good, quite crisp and nice contrasts. The sound quality is also fairly good. A bit of echoes mainly on the vocals, but you can hear what every instrument is doing apart from each other and they are all mixed in pretty well.
This is Krisiun as they are supposed to be. A trio who are very adapt at making ultra fast deathmetal with continued machinegun blasting and some furious solos and riffing. They‘ve been doing this from the start of Krisiun back in 1990 and never strayed of this musical path. And this much to the appreciation of the Polish audience, because a slam pit frequently breaks out in the front rows.
Krisiun rip through their set with cold precision. Singer Alex Camargo frequently grunts some standard things between the songs like: “Support death fucking metal” and then announces the next song, all in the monotonous way as he grunts in the songs. | |
And now for the extras, and these are a lot.
You’ll find another complete concert in the extras. This concert was filmed in Sao Paolo, Brazil also in 2004. And this time handheld camera’s where used, which resulted in somewhat more chaotic footage. But it’s still worth looking though, because the quality of the imagery is fairly good. I liked the sound quality even better then the main concert because there was much less echo. The venue where this was filmed was apparently smaller.
This concert lasts for a good 45 minutes.
Krisiun plays a gig on home terrain here and this is immediately noticeable, because the crowd goes wild straight from song number one. Alex Carmago, Moyses Kolesne and Max Kolesne work their setlist at full speed as usual and this time no rattling between the songs but only the announcements of the next song. The only noteworthy interruption is a rather shoddy drum solo of Mr. Max Kolesne...
The other extra’s are some bootleg clips of Wacken 2001 (Expect what you know about bootlegs. Nice to watch, but crappy footage and sounds), a video clip from the song ‘Murderer’, the band’s biography and discography, a photo gallery, some downloadable desktop wallpapers and some footage of the ‘Works of Carnage’ recordings sessions. I especially like this last bit, because you can see the guys from Krisiun playing alone and apart from each other, so you can take a peak at their playing techniques.
All-in-all this is a nice DVD that clocks in about 110 minutes in total. The fact that it contains all these above mentioned extras only ads up to all the fun. I am personally not a big fan of Krisiun, but I think it’s safe to say that fans from ultra fast relentless brutal deathmetal, and especially fans of Krisiun, can buy this DVD with their eyes closed.
