The hardest task for a band is to write a follow-up album when your previous album was a huge succes. Unearths 2004 ‘The Oncoming Storm’ made them a really big band. They got a spot on Ozzy’s traffeling Ozzfest because of it and Unearth became a band that does headline tours all over the world.
Unearth is a band that captured a spot for themselves in a time where a lot of bands get big by purely copying leading bands like Killswitch Engage, Lamb Of God and As I Lay Dying to name a few.
I can tell you that Unearth keeps this spot because III sounds like Unearth. It’s the perfect follow-up album. When I first heard the album I wasn’t imidiately blown away. I thought it was ‘The Oncoming Storm’ all over again. But listening to this album a few times made me realise that this album is really good. | |
The album is more mature then there previous ones. Unearth still use the ingredients (melodic trash, Iron Maiden-riffs and mosh) that they’re known for. There’s more mosh on this album and III contains more highspeed trashriffs than ‘The oncoming Storm’.
Productionwise III is perfectly done. Big name Terry Date (Pantera) was in control for this one, and he lives up to his reputation, III sounds awesome.
To wrap this up: if you’re into Unearths previous albums this one won’t let you down. Maybe you’ll have to give this record a couple of spins just like me, to come to the conclusion that III might even be better than the previous one. If you haven’t heard of Unearth before and you like to hear diversity, melody, agression and some asskicking moshriffs you should CHECK THIS BABY OUT!!!
