“Middles” is a release between records. It gives an image of where these Dutch guys are now with their music. Opener ‘Still Close Enough’ is a logical step after “Sharp Instead” (their debut album). It’s still a heavy, emotional (angry) song, but the first signs of progress are also noticeable. Pat got more room to impress with his voice and the band is not only interested in playing - heavy - straightforward. This one song contains almost more tempo breaks than their debut. Biggest step forward is the attention for detail. A woman’s (?) scream and a better production that creates more room for the different instruments make this song noticeable better than their previous material. That the band is more self-confident than during their debut is noticeable during their next songs. ‘2D’ takes a giant step back in pace in comparison to their earlier songs. It sometimes reminds of the old, but slower, Clawfinger. The end of the song takes the music into a whole different (even impressive) direction. | |
Next song ‘Prone’ is strongly influenced by the music of Nick Cave, but than in a more experimental way. ‘D’escargot’ proves (next to opener ‘Still Close Enough’) again that the band made progress in their way of handling their music instruments and production. The music isn’t that different from their debut, but the song writing has highly improved (in all the songs, actually). ‘Photographs’, as the last studio song, shows again that the band got more courage in their way of playing music. It’s a laidback song with an almost (quiet) rapping Pat .
After a lecture of all kind of pussy’s the EP ends with 4 live songs (‘Altamira’, ‘100 Stories’, ‘Snuff’ and ‘Choke’) recorded during their gig on Pinkpop (a festival in the Netherlands). It shows - again - that the band is a thrilling live act. On the other hand this EP shows that their new material is (even) better.
