Darkbuster should be happy with this re-release. ‘A weakness for Spirits’ is it called by these old servants from Boston. Boston you say? Ah another street punk rock record with rock and roll and catchy vocal lines? That’s true. In the veins of Far From Finished, Blue Bloods, Dropkick Murphy’s and Ducky Boys? Also right. But not completely. Darkbuster was there when all these bands still had to be founded or record an album.
Finally they get a proper release in europe, and this music deserves to be heard. 18 songs, over half an hour you get a mixture of Punk Rock, some Ska Influences, Oi and some hardcore. It’s done many times before, and often by Boston bands, but all these bands have quality, it should be an inspiring place to start a band.
These 18 songs are like said before, full with quality, and with awesome vocals. | |
But that’s also a little point of criticism on this record: in opener ‘we are darkbuster’ and ‘stand and deliver’ it doesn’t sound mean enough. Vocals like these should be meaner, they have to cut to your ears like barb wire. Further down the record with songs like ‘Armaggedon Time’and ‘Give Up Dope’ they do it right. Vocalist Rice definitely ventilates some creativity and is a pretty good singer, comparable to Al Barr (Dropkick Murphy’s ) and Mark Lind (Ducky Boys). Songs like ‘Whiskey Will’, ‘Skinhead’ and ‘Shoulda known better’ will settle down in your head. And so every song has it’s quality and huge ‘unity’feeling. Perfect songs for an Irish Pub. ‘Grandma is a nazi’ is an exception, some humor on this record, nothing wrong with that. You can smash someones head in with a smile on your face, can’t you?
