In 1991 Frederik Andersson (Amon Amarth) amongst others created the band A Conorous Quintet. They reached a cult status in Sweden. In 1998 the band quits and Frederik continued his duties in Amon Amarth. The other band members also started up new bands. In 2005 they decided to join forces again and This Ending was born.
Inside The Machine is the band’s debut album. The record starts of great with ‘Seeds Of Destruction’ and ‘Inside The Machine’. And I get the feeling that since Impious I haven’t heard a death/thrash band that surprised me this much. But the following few songs don’t really reach the level of the opening songs, and frankly bore me a little bit. The sixth song is called ‘Armageddon’ and kicks ass again. | |
The rest of the album is nice but I’ve heard this style just too many times for these songs to leave a special feeling. I could easily mention 10 other bands that play the style This Endings plays. That’s where the problem is for me. The songs (except for the three mentioned ones) don’t have anything that stands out or makes it interesting, and there are bands that just do it better.
On the other hand the production is great and really brutal. The musicians know what they’re doing and play really tight. For die-hard Scandinavian death/trash fans my critical notes can probably be overseen and taken lightly.
