With Militant Mother the German band Nikky Puppet releases their second album. The band formed by Nicky Gronewold (vocals) and Christos Mamalitsidis (guitar) toured in 2006 with MSG and played at their gig the new song ‘Militant Mother’ that wasn’t released yet then, so I was rather curious about this album. Both members are quite important for Nikky Puppet, the vocals of Gronewald are real rock-vocals, very powerful and emotional. Mamalitsidis is responsible for the heavy riffs and the sharp solos.

There are several heavy rock songs on Militant Mother (‘Lost in Time’, ‘If’, ‘I don’t know’) and they all are very powerful because of the heavy riffs by both guitar and bass guitar and the aggressive way of drumming. A disadvantage is that the songs have more or less the same kind of riffs and melodies so they all sound the same; don’ get me wrong, these songs aren’t bad at all, but too many of these songs get boring after a while.

Fortunately there are enough songs that vary from the heavy rock songs.

The title track is a heavy song with very heavy riffs, rough voices, a bit slowed down and a superb guitar solo! ‘Open your Mind’ has groovy riffs, this song definitely rocks. ’Paralyzed’ is a very aggressive song, ‘Paltry’ is the strangest song of the album with almost funky elements and a great solo. ‘Turning in Circles’ is an emotional power ballad with very heavy moments (listen to the solo, superb), together with the title song the best song of album.

Militant Mother has definitely great songs, therefore this band outweighs most other heavy rock bands. Still the album might sound boring after while because of the same way of aggressive playing of the drums and guitar on every song, most songs on the album begin to sound like each other. Because of songs like ‘Militant Mother’, ‘Turning in Circles’, ‘Open Your Mind’ and ‘Paltry’ Militant Mother has the advantage of the doubt.
