Lately I get the feeling that I’m writing the same review over and over again. A large percentage of albums that is being released right know all contain the same ingredients (Swedish metal riffs, clean vocals combined with screams and Hatebreed styled breakdowns). A few bands really stand out and the rest seem to copy these bands. The debut EP from the German collective Farewell To Words does contain these popular ingredients as well. It’s a shame that bands like FTW get drawn to these influences so much, because this is a band with a lot of potential. The members know how to play their instruments and the band is able to write a well structured song. That the band is really searching for an own style can be found in the variety of influences on Tear Down This Wall.
The first song goes by the name of ‘Allurement To The Void’ and is a combination of American hardcore and metalcore; Unearth and All Shall Perish can be seen as a big influence for this song. | |
The second song reminds me of what Bleeding Through does. ‘In Front Of Your Hope’, the third song has a lot of Bolt Thrower/Heaven Shall Burn riffs. The fourth song is a little more chaotic and could be considered as a “simple version” of The Dillinger Escape Plan. The last song on this EP is possibly influenced by Poison The Well.
So a lot of diversity on this EP and that’s what makes this cd enjoyable to listen to. But at the same time it’s not original enough to really stand out in the grey mass of metalcore. As I said earlier, the band has a lot of potential and if they work on a distinct Farewell To Words-style more than listen to other bands we might hear more from this band in the future.
