There it is, the second full-length effort from Dutch Death Metal act Devious.
Three years ago devious’ first full-length ‘Acts of Rage’ was released. After that record some things happened. Vocalist Arnold left. however, Devious didn’t let it hang down and quickly came with new vocalist Coen. They started to tour and played with some well known bands like Cryptosy , Darkane and Suffocation and so fort.
Some experience was gained, writing skills improved and when the time was ripe they jumped into the studio and came out with this record called ‘Domain’.
This is an impressive record. After an instrumental intro the first brutal chords of ‘Room 302’ will definitely keep your attention and won’t let it escape. With melodic yet brutal riffs, intelligent breaks and cool drum patterns they deliver a product that is of very high quality and the production is also something worth mentioning. It sounds really transparent and clear. | |
With some surprising moments, like the Cradle Of Filth-esque ‘Boundless Domain’ (which features awesome riffs), the instrumental ‘Suoived part 2’ , which has a gasp for breath at the ending and goes on in ‘The Repentance’ or the catchy hooks in ’Lowest Of The Food Chain’, they deliver some impressive songs.
But without mentioning every song, I recommend every death and thrash metal fan to give this record a chance. It’s full of cool breaks, explosions, rhythmic changes and vocals. About the latter: Coen shows he has a pretty wide reach with his voice, from whispers to screams.
If you like your metal full of technique, interesting rhythms and brutal riffs and your favourite bands are Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation or Hypocrisy this will be your cd. They’ve grown. And I predict a future in the premier league of death/thrash for Devious.
