An important record for American Death Metal combo Dying Fetus. They gained lots of popularity with records like Grotesque Impalement and especially Destroy The Opposition. But they also lost fans with Stop At Nothing and the empty years between them. Last record Stop At Nothing kind of disappointed. Relatively. A record of Dying Fetus is always high on quality and technical perfection. But with the last record it stagnated. And because there are four years between that and this one (War Of Attrition), some people were wondering if Dying Fetus still existed. They do. War Of Attrition goes somewhat back to their highly acclaimed Destroy The Opposition. Fast crushing riffs, barking vocals, and a surplus of technique.
But still…War Of Attrition didn’t grab me by the throat like I expected it would. | |
Sometimes it’s still fascinating to listen to, and the riffs are pretty good (but not all). I couldn’t focus my attention for the full length of the album. So I’d rather listen to this record in sessions of a few tracks. Personally, I think they could use a little more groove here and there.
However, Dying Fetus also proves they are making music at a pretty high level. So they keep creating high expectations. They don’t come out to the full with this record, but they’re on the right track again. According to the guitarist the new album will come out sooner. I’m curious. In any case: there are some marvelous riffs on this record, like in ‘Homocidal Retribution’ and ‘Raping The System’
