The last thing I heard Deadlock make was a combination of extreme metal and mosh a few years ago. So I was pretty surprised when I put Wolves in my cd-player for the first time. The melodic death/black/thrash metal is still there, but this time combined with a woman’s vocals and lots of atmospheric, gothic influences. The band really takes the time to show their technical abilities and contribute to the gothic, black atmosphere by using lots of keyboards. This and aggressive screams and grunts cause Wolves to still sound metal and not to commercial like let’s say Evanescence or Within Temptation.
A negative aspect about Wolves would be the way the band and Sabine uses her voice. Deadlock makes use of this voice as a way of creating a catchy chorus and they do this on most of the album. | |
Because of this it kind of sounds like a trick the band uses over and over again and it becomes predictable after a while. Another thing is that Sabine does very little to put variety into the different songs. I get the feeling her vocal lines are really alike and sometimes even completely the same. While she shows to have a wide reach on the last song To Where The Skies Are Blue.
Deadlock take the music Nightwish and After Forever make a step further. Because of the wide range of influences (black, death, thrashmetal and gothic) the band can reach a wide audience and with Wolves the band has an album that will surprise a lot of people.
