‘As We Die Alone’ is a typical title for a doom metal album. In this case it is the title of the fourth album of the Italian band Thunderstorm. With ‘As We Die Alone’ the band of Fabio “Thunder” Bellan releases a great doom metal album with influences of Black Sabbath and Candlemass. The atmosphere on ‘As We Die Alone’ is sad, just like a doom album is supposed to be. From mid tempo to slow tempo doom, this is your prototype headbangers album. The vocals are quite melancholic and the rhythm section is best described as a smooth velvet carpet of bass and drums, so all required doom elements are present. The riffs and dark atmosphere are similar to the music of Candlemass, however the sad vocals are not quite comparable with the powerful voice of Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass) but they do fit in with the music.

The title song is a superb slow doom metal song with psychedelic influences. A minus there is formed by the vocals: Bellan lisps sometimes, which sounds rather irritating. Fortunately this happens only at the strophes; during the choruses he sings more powerful and it’s hardly audible. ‘S.L.O.W.’ speaks for it self; a slow doom metal song with a great solo that wouldn’t be misplaced on a Candlemass album. This is what doom metal is supposed to sound like.

I’m not too enthusiastic about the Hendrix cover ‘Voodoo Child’. Again, it isn’t a bad performance but the vocals are the minus point.

‘As We Die Alone’ is a great doom metal album with a beautiful sad atmosphere; for all doom fans that like bands like Candlemass, buy this album and play it loud.
