"No Defiance of Fate" is the second full-length release of this Swedish heavy metal formation. But this band certainly has a background. Formed in 1994 Wyvern had to cope up with some line-up changes. That`s also why it took 4 years before "The Wildfire", their debut, came out. After this release their drummer of the first our left the band. Thomas Väänänen (Thyrfing) replaced him. But he also left the band for obligations with his main band. With the new drummer, and alltime friend, Peter Nagy (Hypocrite), Wyvern recorded "No Defiance of Fate". This certainly hasn`t really become an average heavy metal release due to the different influences of the bandmembers. Some of the songs are even played at thrash metal speeds, although the guitar riffs are heavy metal. Most of the time there were two names that kept on being stuck in my head. | |
Blind Guardian and Helloween but it won`t be fair to describe Wyvern as a combination between these two. Therefore Wyvern`s music is to varied. Fast parts are combined with slower parts. From speed metal too heavy metal to even some Swedish thrash (Bewitched alike, "Like Dogs Climbing up the Moon"). You can certainly tell Wyvern has some capable musicians in their formation. "No Defiance of Fate" has become a nice release, but what they do has been done a few times before. The only things I just had to add to this review are: A) Why is it so that on practically every heavy metal release a ballad seems almost obligate? And B) Why do heavy metal bands always sing about warriors, steel, knights and swords? Perhaps I should do an interview with Hammerfall to find out.
