A few months ago I didn’t listen to folk metal at all, I used to listen to folk punk but never to folk metal. I always thought that this combination wasn’t possible because of the big difference.
A while ago I saw Korpiklaani playing in my home town and after that I start liking it a bit more. Now I’ve got a new release by Vintersorg, `Solens Rotter`, and the back of this promo says this really is Nordic folk metal.

After listening to it a couple of times I still had two questions. The first one is `what are they singing about?` And the second one: `Where is the folk between all the metal?`
When you hear the word folk you think of beer, banjos and party. This album has a lot of genres, but you can’t hear a lot of folk in it.

Sometimes you hear some soft whistle, that’s it.
What you can hear is a lot of black metal parts combined with some progressive and even sometimes popular metalcore parts (they did this on purpose). They use the tempo changes at the correct times and that makes it a pleasure to listen `Solens Rotter`.
About the singing parts, the lyrics are in Swedish and unfortunately I don’t understand this language. But this vocalist has got a wonderful voice. At one moment he’s screaming his lungs out and one second later he sings some clean parts.

For me it was the first Vintersorg album and I’m certainly going to check out the older releases from this band.
