Angelcorpse was founded in 1995 by Gene Palubicki (guitars) and Pete Helmkamp (bass and vocals). Pete is also active in blasphemic black metalband Revenge and black-death band Order From Chaos, among others. Gene and Pete form a trio with drummer John Longstreth: Angelcorpse. Angelcorpse has produced four full length albums until now. The first three albums, `Hammer of Gods`, `Exterminate` and `The Inexorable`, were respectively released in 1996, 1998 and 1999. After seven years of waiting they finally return with this new album `Of Lucifer and Lightning`.

Total Morbid Angel worship. Just like on their earlier albums, Angelcorpse continues to make death metal very much like Morbid Angel. The same down tuned lead guitars, the same insane and haunting guitar solos; tight, hammering drums and the same developed song structures.

Overall, the music is faster though, and without atmospheric intermezzos. The Morbid Angel-style is very well imitated.
I am mainly surprised by the chaotic guitarsolos which sometimes almost seem to reach the supreme frenzied level of mastermind Azagthoth. Perhaps the only weakness is the vocals, at least when you compare them to Morbid Angel. Though not bad at all, they do not have the unearthly guttural power of David Vincent`s and sound more like rasping black metal vocals.

Though they are not able to master the unreachable qualities of Morbid Angel, Angelcorpse is very successful in their attempt and delivers great old school US death metal. For those living near the US east coast and those willing to travel a lot, in May there is an Angelcorpse tour, together with mighty Watain and Nachtmystium.
