The Australian progressive metal band Eyefear was founded in 1994. In 2007 they release their third album World Full Of Grey. This time no progressive metal like Dream Theater but a combination of progressive, power and gothic metal.

From the beginning the gothic elements are clearly present, the epic and bombastic keyboards (by Sammy Giaccotto) are overwhelming, the vocals of Danny Cecati fit with the gothic atmosphere, Cecati has a very powerful voice with long notes, he must have huge lungs. This is also the minus point of the album; it gets sometimes a bit irritating. The rhythm foundation (Rob Gorham on bass, Zain Kimmie on drums) varies between progressive and power metal which is strengthened by the heavy guitar riffs (Kosta Papazoglou).

The intro of ‘Searching for forgiveness’ reminds me of After Forever; followed by progressive riffs and vocals like Fates Warning.

Cecati sings very emotional. The song has a beautiful break with piano playing. ‘Changes’ is another masterpiece, this song has an epic intro that is followed by piano and vocals and changes into a great power ballad. Besides progressive metal songs World Full Of Grey has symphonic power metal songs (‘Whispers of the Soul’).

Eyefear combines different kind of metal but knows how to create a sound of their own. With heavy progressive riffs and bombastic keyboards varied with symphonic power metal songs World Full Of Grey is an interesting album. The vocals sometimes get tiring, but the structure of the songs, melodies, epic performances and the production are great.
