From the very north of Europe the Finish band Mehida releases their debut album Blood & Water. To release an album at a huge metal music label as Napalm Records must be the dream of every band, the progressive metal style of Mehida fits very well with this renowned label. The sound of Blood & Water is heavy but yet crystal clear, the songs vary from symphonic to aggressive metal, from slow tempo to up tempo; but always melodic and with a lot of progressive elements.
The vocals (Thomas Vikström) are very powerful, the riffs are heavy. The solos (guitar - Jani Stefanovic and Keyboards - Mikko Harkin) are played very technically. The solid rhythm section is formed by Jarno Raitio (bass) and Markus Niemispelto (drums). | |
The style is definitely melodic progressive metal, it’s hard to compare Mehida with any other band; there are Dream Theater influences absolutely, but also some Evergrey and Beyond Twilight influences. Blood & Water sounds as a product of the whole band. It is hard to mention a favourite song; there are only highlights. ‘Multitude’ and Dry Bones’ are one of these highlights; both songs have an aggressive intro that changes into great progressive song with a great structure. ‘A Letter From Home’ shows the "soft side of Mehida but still very heavy.
Blood & Water is one of those albums that must be a part of every progressive metal collection. I am sure we will hear a lot of Mehida in future. (Ralph) |
