Over the past four years, Seattle quintet Aiden has built up a reputation as an outstanding, energetic live band with a considerably large fan base.
After the release of 2005’s `Nightmare Anatomy`, every Aiden fan has been looking forward to what this band will do next.
With `Conviction`, Aiden release their third full-length album and the first few notes of opening track The Opening Departure already tell us these guys have gone through a huge metamorphosis: the unpolished punkiness that once distinguished this band from any other mediocre rock band has made place for a much more poppy and mainstream sound. A perfect example to demonstrate this is the first single One Love. The track has the perfect ingredients to make a hit: a catchy riff, lyrics that aren’t that hard to remember and a chorus that has the obliging force to make you sing along at the top of your lungs.
But persevering as we from REZ are, we continue our search for the old Aiden. Even the slightest hint of that wild, fearless, “we don’t give a fuck what you think about us”-band we used to know will do. | |
And when listening to Son Of Lies we are launched back to the time where Aiden used to play tiny venues and handed out CD’s personally to build up their fan base. But the intro of Believe is enough to get us back with our feet to the ground, to a time and place where Aiden have become bigger than they would have ever dreamed they would be.
This band has come a long way, but somewhere along the path these guys seem to have lost something. True, there are some extraordinarily catchy songs on this record, our favourites being Teenage Queen and She Will Love You. But fact remains that for the greater part `Conviction` consists, disappointingly, of power ballads. In songs like Moment and The Sky Is Falling the band seems to take themselves too seriously, resulting in a set of tracks that make us want to slit our wrists rather than dance and jump around and just have fun. And that’s not exactly what we expect from a group of young and energetic guys like Aiden.
Cheer up, dudes! (Yasmine) |
