After the success of the Dutch Tribute and the first volume of the Worldwide Tribute, Onno Cromag and Roger Miret apparently decided to put out a second edition of the Worldwide Tribute to the Real Oi. The whole idea behind this compilation is that modern punk- and hardcore bands like Ignite and Death Threat cover songs from legendary eighties Oi-bands as Cock Sparrer, The Business and Peter & The Test Tube Babies. Since Oi has always been the ultimate working-class form of punk, the songs you get here are simple and direct with a lot of sing-a-longs and oi’s (Yes, really!) and, to be honest, in some cases make me want to go to a pub and have a beer. As far as I know (I’m not exactly an expert when it comes to Oi) the bands on this CD keep their versions close to the original ones and since almost all the songs presented here are classic songs by classic bands, most of the songs just rock. ‘New York Belongs To Me’ by Roger and the Disasters (Originally from Cock Sparrer), Murphy’s Law having fun with ‘Drinking and Driving’ from the Business and ‘We’re Coming Back’ by The Bouncing Souls (also from Cock Sparrer) are some of my favorites here, but I’m sorry to say that I was pretty disappointed by the songs Death Threat recorded.

(Their own songs are great, but there’s just something missing here, I don’t know what.) All bands have room in the booklet to explain what Oi means to them, which is very nice and gives some insight in what the music is all about. (Also, there is a ‘somewhat silly’ picture of Onno in the booklet, check it our for a good laugh!) Although over 70 minutes of Oi is a but too much for me to take in one go, this CD is a good opportunity to pick up a load of classic punk songs or, in case you’re an old-fashioned Oi-fan, to get to know some of the new bands around.
