Hidden “Black Sabbath”? Yes, and in what way! No screaming guitars, pounding drums, and no howling Ozzy (no offense, I like the way Ozzy howls). These really are Black Sabbath songs, but in a very different way. While you can still recognise the original in the Apocalyptica versions of Metallica songs, this is more difficult. You can let your parents listen to this album and few of them will recognise the songs, or even hear that these are songs recreated from old time hard rock classics. Back in 1993 Rondellus was founded, and they started performing medieval, and renaissance music. | |
“Sabbatum”, their fourth album, consists of Black Sabbath songs played on authentic medieval instruments like psaltery, hurdy-gurdy, harp, organistrum, lute, bagpipe, fiddle, and frame drum. No massive, bombastic production (like the ERA CDs), but a modest performance, with a leading role for the harmonic vocals in Latin(!). It’s something completely different, and whether you like it or not, it’s a work of art. (Cor) |
