It’s always good to be surprised by a band you didn’t know before. This UNDERGOD made such a great impression during their live show (before Zeromancer) that REZ just had to pay attention to this release. Thomas Baumgartner (vocals and guitar) and Fran Lorkovic (drums) have also played together during the early nineties, in Erotic Jesus. Thomas also played in Gurd; some people will know this band because they released some records and had some shows in Europe. Last member of the band is bass player Patrik Aellig. As a threesome they create music that reminds of the early Filter. UNDERGOD is, however, heavier. The music is more guitar oriented than that of the American band. Still, if you listen to some of the songwriting on this album you will find that these Swiss have the same approach to their music. Listen to the title song ‘Trapped’, ‘Amazing’, ‘Automatic’ and ‘American B.

H.’ for instance. On the other hand it’s too easy to say that the band is nothing more than this. They got great songs and definitely a vibe you don’t hear too much. The somewhat rough production leaves room for the different musicians. Especially the acceleration of the drummer during this record is breathtaking. Only a pity that the songs keep mostly the same structure. It’s not that every song is the same, but the intention and heaviness are all on the same level. Therefore the record loses its attraction in the end. ‘Values’ is the exception to the rule, because this song wakes you up with some bass and guitar parts you just have to hear. In the end UNDERGOD impresses with this heavy rock album that should be liked by industrial and heavy rock/metal fans. Just got “Trapped”.
